Having a professional photography studio certainly brings in interesting clients. Our bread and butter is youth sports photography, senior pictures, and professional business portraits. But the professional business portrait that we shot today wasn’t human. Not at all. In fact he was a bird!
Meet Buddy the Rooster!
Buddy needed professional portraits for gigs he is doing with Memorytown Country Inn and Event Center. Memorytown is a local wedding and event venue and Buddy makes part of his living by being a ring bearer in country weddings there. He needs portraits in his Tuxedo to show engaged couples who are planning a country style wedding.
Buddy’s handler, Pat Lessard, had Buddy groomed the day before the session because birds have to dry naturally (hair driers will burn our feathered friends) and brought him into the studio.
We have dozens, if not hundreds, of backgrounds at our studio. We chose the one shown here because it depicts the outdoors and fits well with the theme that Buddy needed.
The session went well and pretty quickly. Buddy had no problem with our studio lights flashing. Pat previewed the images on the iPad as we photographed Buddy and picked a couple out that showed him at his best.
During the session Buddy was the perfect gentleman. We learned a lot about him too. Buddy is a three year old therapy bird. He was born in Canadensis and cost Pat $3.00. When he isn’t stealing the show at weddings, he visits pre-schools, kindergarten classes, assisted living facilities, and attends local community days. He’s even been to Knoebels on pet day and attracted a lot of attention there. He is as tame as an animal can be, follows commands well, and is a really good boy.
Pat, Buddys handler and best friend, has worked with animals all her life. She was raised on a farm and was a vet tech for 35+ years. She knows everything one can imagine about chickens and roosters. Even the oddball things, like what types of diapers they need to wear. Believe it or not, there is a bikini diaper for chickens. Buddy wears a different type though. Buddy has different outfits and always walks on a leash in public.
Photographing Buddy was a different type of portrait client for Bender Photography. But we did what we always try to do… Make him look his best!
