Hooray for the “classic” look

Posted on Thursday, August 20, 2009 in Backstage at Bender Photography
I talk all the time about our contemporary photography, our photo adventures along Main street, our location adventures at people’s houses, or at stables, firehouses, parks or at other interesting locales. But I don’t talk about the classic stuff much, so I want to touch on that today.
Senior portraits have come a long way in the past few years.  In many ways, anything that is professionally created is now acceptable.  The “model look” is very popular.  But there are still a lot of people that want or need a more straightforward “senior portrait” looking photograph.
We’ve been doing that type of work for years.  Our “swing”shot is almost an icon of our outside sessions.  We still get dozens of requests for it every year.  So we do it.  And we make it as fresh and fun as possible.  We change the flowers to match the outfit, make sure the light, hair and pose is perfect , and then we shoot it.  It still looks great!
Another shot that we do a lot of is the”drape shot”.  The “drape” is the off the shoulder thing that looks like an old fashioned evening dress.  It’s the traditional look for girls senior portraits.  It’s a “fussy” shot to get right.  All of the elements of the picture have to be just right.  When it is correct it looks fabulous, but when it is off a little it looks downright stupid.  But we do a lot of drape shots. A lot of the time we do it because the “school” photographer doesn’t know how to get it right.
We have other classic shots, too.  They are classics because they have stood the test of time.  They always look good and will still look “classic” 30 years from now.
